Grass Block
SUSTAINABILITY & URBAN DESIGNbeginner
Definition
Permeable paving block — a concrete or plastic unit with voids filled with soil and grass, allowing pedestrian or light vehicle passage while maintaining vegetation cover and groundwater infiltration. Grass block is used in parking areas, emergency access roads, and landscaped plazas to reduce heat island effect and manage stormwater in Indonesian cities.
Example
An Indonesian mixed-use development uses grass blocks in its service drive and overflow parking — the interlocking concrete frame supporting vehicle loads while the grass-filled voids reduce surface temperature and absorb rainfall that would otherwise flood the site.
