Paving Block
SUSTAINABILITY & URBAN DESIGNbeginner
Definition
Interlocking concrete paver or paving stone — a modular unit used for outdoor paving (driveways, patios, walkways, and plazas) that allows water infiltration between joints. Paving blocks are cheaper and faster to install than cast concrete, allow flexibility in design and repair, and support groundwater recharge. They are standard in Indonesian residential and commercial landscaping.
Example
An Indonesian house entrance uses 20×20 cm interlocking paving blocks in light grey, laid in a running bond pattern — the gaps filled with sand allowing rainwater to percolate to the soil below, reducing runoff and groundwater depletion.
