Geotextile
SUSTAINABILITY & URBAN DESIGNintermediate
Definition
Geotextile membrane — a permeable fabric layer placed over soil to separate materials, filter water, and control erosion. Geotextile is commonly used under paving-blocks and grass-blocks to prevent soil migration into the drainage layer while allowing water percolation. It also strengthens weak soils by distributing loads.
Example
An Indonesian parking area uses geotextile laid over the subgrade before the gravel drainage layer and paving blocks — the fabric allowing water infiltration while preventing fines from the subgrade from mixing into the drainage layer.
