Keramik
BUILDING MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTIONbeginner
Definition
Ceramic floor and wall tiles — the near-universal interior finishing material in Indonesian buildings, from the simplest kampung house to luxury hotels. Keramik is preferred in the Indonesian tropics for its cool surface temperature underfoot, ease of cleaning, and resistance to humidity and insects. Standard sizes are 30×30 cm, 40×40 cm, and 60×60 cm for floors, with larger format tiles used in commercial and prestige applications.
Example
The characteristic look of an Indonesian middle-class house interior — white or cream keramik floor tiles laid in a grid with 2–3 mm nat joints, running through every room — has become so universal that it functions as a default baseline from which more designed interiors consciously depart.
