Pasangan Bata
BUILDING MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTIONbeginner
Definition
Masonry brickwork laid in mortar — the most prevalent wall construction method in Indonesian buildings from colonial-era structures to contemporary housing. In standard Indonesian construction practice, pasangan bata walls are finished with plesteran (render) and acian (skim coat) before painting, unless a deliberate exposed brick finish (bata ekspos) is specified.
Example
The colonial-era shop houses (ruko) of Kota Tua Jakarta are built with pasangan bata walls in English bond — their thick masonry providing thermal mass that keeps interiors relatively cool even without mechanical ventilation in Jakarta's tropical climate.
