Bata Ekspos
BUILDING MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTIONbeginner
Definition
Brickwork left deliberately unplastered and unpainted, exposing the masonry bond as a finished surface. In Indonesian architecture, bata ekspos became a hallmark of the contemporary movement in the 1990s–2000s, particularly in Bandung and Jakarta, where architects used its raw texture as an aesthetic counterpoint to glass and concrete.
Example
Andra Matin's residential and cultural projects in Jakarta consistently feature bata ekspos walls, pairing exposed brick with concrete and glass to create a restrained, tactile material palette.
