RIBA Plan of Work
PRACTICE & STANDARDSintermediate
Definition
The standard framework used in the UK to describe the stages of a building project from initial briefing to post-occupancy evaluation. The Plan of Work divides a project into eight stages (0–7): Strategic Definition, Preparation and Briefing, Concept Design, Spatial Coordination, Technical Design, Manufacturing and Construction, Handover, and Use.
Example
A client commissioning a new office building in the UK will typically appoint their architect at Stage 1 (Preparation and Briefing), receive concept options at Stage 2, and agree detailed costs at Stage 4 (Technical Design) before tendering for a contractor.
