Galvalum
BUILDING MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTIONbeginner
Definition
Galvalume steel sheet — steel coated with a aluminium-zinc alloy that provides superior corrosion resistance compared to plain galvanised steel. Galvalum is used for roofing, cladding, gutters, and flashing in Indonesian buildings, offering 50+ year lifespan in tropical conditions. It has largely replaced asbestos and galvanised iron in new construction.
Example
Modern Indonesian residential roofing typically uses galvalum corrugated sheets (0.35–0.5 mm thick) over a rangka-atap-baja-ringan frame — the shiny grey-silver coated surface shedding heavy monsoon rain while the underlying steel resists coastal salt corrosion.
