Batu Bata
BUILDING MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTIONbeginner
Definition
Fired brick — a generic term for clay bricks, encompassing both traditional handmade bata merah and industrial pressed varieties. Batu bata is the primary masonry unit across Indonesia, available in standard sizes (20×10×10 cm, 20×10×5 cm, etc.) and in grades from soft handmade brick to hard industrial brick. It remains the most common material for load-bearing walls in residential construction.
Example
An Indonesian contractor buying 'batu bata' at the toko bangunan typically means industrial pressed brick in 10 cm height (1 setengah = 1.5 layers per 30 cm), standard across Java — softer than ulin production but harder and more uniform than traditional bata merah.
