Bangunan Cagar Budaya
Definition
A heritage-listed building — a structure formally designated for cultural heritage protection under Indonesian Law No. 11 of 2010 on Cultural Heritage (Cagar Budaya). Designation restricts demolition, alteration, and incompatible development, requiring special permits for any work affecting the structure, fabric, or setting of the listed building. Local governments maintain registers of bangunan cagar budaya, and violations carry criminal as well as administrative penalties.
Example
The Lawang Sewu building in Semarang — the former Dutch East Indies Railways headquarters (1904) — is a bangunan cagar budaya protected at national level, meaning any renovation work requires approval from the Ministry of Education and Culture and must preserve the original facade, structural system, and spatial character.
