Ventilasi Silang
Definition
Cross-ventilation — the arrangement of openings on opposite or adjacent sides of a space so that wind pressure differences drive airflow through the building. Ventilasi silang is a fundamental passive cooling strategy in tropical architecture, capable of reducing perceived indoor temperatures significantly without mechanical systems. Effective cross-ventilation requires inlet and outlet openings aligned with prevailing wind directions, with an unobstructed wind path between them.
Example
Traditional Javanese rumah joglo achieve ventilasi silang through the open-sided pendopo pavilion — the absence of walls at ground level allows unimpeded airflow across the floor, while the tiered central roof creates a stack effect that draws warm air upward through the crown.
