Rumah Joglo

Definition
The most prestigious form of traditional Javanese house, characterised by a tall central roof supported by four main columns (saka guru) that carry a tiered pyramidal crown. The joglo roof form communicates social status — only aristocratic and priyayi-class families were traditionally permitted to build them. The main space beneath the central roof (pendopo) is an open pavilion used for receiving guests and ceremonial functions.
Example
The Keraton Yogyakarta, the royal palace of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, contains multiple pendopo pavilions with classic joglo roof forms, each scaled to the rank of ceremony conducted within, demonstrating how the typology encodes social hierarchy in architectural form.
