Pringgitan
Definition
The semi-public transitional space in a traditional Javanese house compound, located between the open pendopo at the front and the private dalem at the rear. The pringgitan mediates between public and private life — it is where wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances were traditionally held, its name derived from 'ringgit' (puppet). Architecturally, it is typically a covered verandah or enclosed room that can be opened to either the pendopo or the dalem depending on the occasion.
Example
In a traditional priyayi house in Surakarta, the pringgitan is a long narrow space between the pendopo columns and the dalem entrance — its floor slightly elevated above the pendopo and below the dalem, physically encoding the three-tier hierarchy of Javanese domestic space.
