Definition
Indonesian architect (1930–2022) and a pioneering figure of contextual modernism in the post-independence period. Han Awal argued that Indonesian architecture should develop its own identity rooted in local materials, tropical climate, and spatial traditions, rather than importing Western styles unchanged. He was instrumental in establishing Indonesian architecture education and the professional body IAI (Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia).
Example
Han Awal's Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Tekstil in Bandung integrates tropical ventilation strategies and local material use with a modern spatial clarity, reflecting his conviction that modernism and Indonesian identity are not in conflict.
