Friedrich Silaban
Definition
Indonesian architect (1912–1984) and the dominant figure in national state architecture during the Sukarno era. A Batak Christian from North Sumatra, Silaban won the government competition for the Masjid Istiqlal in Jakarta — the largest mosque in Southeast Asia — and designed many of Indonesia's most significant civic buildings. His work synthesised modernist principles with an understanding of tropical climate and the political ambitions of the new republic.
Example
The Masjid Istiqlal in Jakarta (completed 1978 after 17 years of construction) by Friedrich Silaban demonstrates monumental civic scale — its vast concrete dome and open colonnade designed to accommodate up to 200,000 worshippers while maintaining natural air circulation through the structure.
