Anyaman Bambu
BUILDING MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTIONbeginner
Definition
Woven bamboo panels — made by splitting bamboo culms into thin strips and weaving them in diagonal, twill, or hexagonal patterns to form flat infill panels. Anyaman bambu is used for wall cladding, screens, partitions, and ceiling linings in vernacular and contemporary Indonesian architecture. The woven pattern allows air to pass through while providing shade and visual privacy, making it an effective passive climate control element in the tropics.
Example
The community pavilions of Yori Antar's Wae Rebo restoration in Flores use anyaman bambu for the interior wall surfaces of the Mbaru Niang houses — the woven panels providing ventilation, acoustic dampening, and a surface that weathers gracefully in the humid highland climate.
