Structural Engineer
PRACTICE & STANDARDSbeginner
Definition
A specialist engineer responsible for designing the structural system of a building — ensuring it can safely support all loads (gravity, wind, seismic) within acceptable limits of strength and deflection. Structural engineers work alongside architects and must certify that the building's structure complies with codes before construction.
Example
Arup's structural engineers worked with Jørn Utzon on the Sydney Opera House to develop the geometry and structural solution for the iconic shell roofs — a collaboration without which the building could not have been built.
