Rumah Bolon

HISTORY & CULTURESbeginner

Definition

The traditional house of the Batak people of North Sumatra, raised on heavy hardwood posts with a dramatically steep saddle roof that sweeps up at both ends and is thatched with ijuk or corrugated iron in contemporary versions. Rumah bolon are communal structures housing multiple related families, with the interior divided into sleeping areas along the sides and a central shared space. The facade is richly decorated with geometric Batak motifs in the characteristic red, black, and white colour palette.

Example

The preserved rumah bolon village of Huta Siallagan on Samosir Island in Lake Toba retains its original layout — a cluster of facing longhouses with carved and painted facades arranged around a shared stone-paved courtyard — demonstrating the complete spatial and social organisation of a traditional Batak settlement.
