Honai
Definition
The traditional circular dwelling of the Dani and related highland peoples of Papua, with a conical grass-thatched roof that descends almost to ground level and a small low doorway requiring occupants to crouch when entering. The honai has no windows — its dark, smoky interior is deliberately designed to retain warmth at elevations above 1,600 metres in the Baliem Valley, where nights are cold despite the equatorial latitude. Men and women traditionally occupy separate honai within the same compound.

In the Baliem Valley near Wamena, Dani villages consist of clusters of honai grouped within a wooden palisade — the round form and thick thatched roof of each dwelling acting as insulation against the highland cold, demonstrating how vernacular architecture adapts precisely to local climate regardless of broader tropical context.
