STRUCTURE & PHYSICSintermediate
Definition
A continuous arched structure forming a ceiling or roof, constructed so that the curved surface transfers loads to the walls below. The barrel vault is the simplest form — a semicircular arch extended in depth. The Gothic ribbed vault was a breakthrough that concentrated forces into ribs and reduced the need for heavy walls.
Example
The Gothic nave of Chartres Cathedral (1220) uses ribbed vaults of exceptional height — the structural efficiency of the ribs allowed the walls between to be opened up with enormous stained-glass windows.
