Genius Loci

/ˈdʒiːniəs ˈloʊsaɪ/

SUSTAINABILITY & URBAN DESIGNadvanced

Definition

Latin for 'spirit of a place.' In architecture and urbanism, genius loci refers to the distinctive, intangible character that makes a place feel unique — its light, materials, scale, topography, sounds, and accumulated memory. Architects like Christian Norberg-Schulz argued that good architecture should respond to and reinforce this spirit.

Example

The city of Siena in Tuscany has an extraordinarily strong genius loci — its ochre brick, shell-shaped central piazza, and hill topography create a consistency of character almost unaltered since the 14th century.
